New life?

Headline: NASA-Funded Research Discovers Life Built With Toxic Chemical

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/universe/features/astrobiology_toxic_chemical.html

This was pretty interesting, however, after reading the article, I only thought two  things:

1. I think NASA is looking for new life in the wrong place…

2. “The definition of life has just expanded,” said Ed Weiler, NASA’s associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate at the agency’s Headquarters in Washington. “As we pursue our efforts to seek signs of life in the solar system, we have to think more broadly, more diversely and consider life as we do not know it.”

So, where have they been for the past 30 or 40 years of Science-Fiction?  SciFi authors have been postulating this theory for a long time but now suddenly NASA is realizing this?  Someone needs to get out of the lab more…

I actually thought three things, the last being a line from the Simpsons: “I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.”  Doesn’t quite apply but the sentiment is there.

Church: 0, Goodwill: 1

That’s the last time I take stuff over there … I am extremely irritated.  A local church asked during mass last week for donations of clothing, toys and other stuff for those families that don’t have much this season.  So today, after going through a bunch of our old baby’s toys and clothes and other stuff that was put away, we packed my Ford Edge so full that there was barely enough room left for two adults and a child – this is no exaggeration, there was a lot of stuff.  We drive it over there and when we got there, some guy actually told us that they wouldn’t take it because they didn’t have anyone to sort through it all.  Must be nice to be a beggar AND a chooser.  There are some families that will miss out on a ton of stuff because some asshole couldn’t be bothered.  I want to go to mass tomorrow and tell them to shut the f**k up when they ask for donations again.

Goodwill was all over themselves to take it all off our hands … I probably could have gotten them to wash my car they were so grateful.

Techno-geek

Because I saw a friend do it, I decided to add a feed to Facebook from my blog.  I think I have it working so this will be the first real test.

Oracle’s Sun acquisition

For God’s sake, could Oracle possibly have it’s head any further up its ass?  In an announcement made yesterday about the finalization of the Sun acquisition, they made some,I thought, very naive comments.

There is no doubt that this combination transforms the IT industry.  With the addition of servers, storage, SPARC processors, the Solaris operating system, Java and the MySQL database to Oracle’s portfolio of database, middleware, and business and industry applications, we plan to engineer and deliver open and integrated systems – from applications to disk – where all the pieces fit and work together out of the box.

Huh?  Java?  Solaris?  SPARC processors?  They should change their logo to an elephant because these “out of the box” application solutions will be the biggest pieces of crap taking up room in your datacenter.

On another note, while I hope that they continue to give attention to MySQL, I have the feeling that we’ve seen the last of good innovation on a great, little database.

Movie time

We went to the movies today; we took the kids to see Disney’s The Princess and the Frog.  It reminded me why we don’t really go to movies any more.  Between the ticket prices and concessions, we spent somewhere around 70 bucks!  And then, half-way through the movie, we discovered that it wasn’t quite Joshua’s cup of tea.  I think that Lisa missed a lot of the plot while kid-wrangling.  People complain about the prices of DV/BluRay discs these days but comparatively, I think waiting for it to hit home media is a much better option.  I need to step up efforts to get a home theater done and then we wont even have to worry about it.

Happy New Year

Counting down to the new year, we have just over three hours left in 2009.  For us, it wasn’t a horrible year but I have many friends that are happy to see the backside of this year as it leaves out the door.  The experts are saying that the economy is turning around but companies are still downsizing so I guess it just hasn’t reached our level yet … I’m no economy expert.  All I can do is hope that we do well enough at work so that we float to the top and keep our jobs.  Here’s to a very happy and prosperous New Year!

As is my new tradition, I’m working on my goals list.  Unfortunately, it’s wrapping up to be exactly the same as it is every year.  This year, the number one item is to actually work on the list next year.

Merry Christmas

For those that celebrate, I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!  Please have a safe and merry holiday!

Wow.  Not much to say here except, requiescat in pace.

2008 wrap up?

A good friend of mine just posted his 2008 wrap up to his MySpace and it reminded me that I’ve wanted to do something like that – the kind of thing that you see in the year-end Christmas letters but done here on my blog instead.  I know some people bemoan those but I think there are more people that are willing to admit that they really like to catch up with their friends/family like that.  So I say I’ve been meaning to do that and I’ll continue saying it since, really, a post of “January: Kids, work; February: kids, work” gets quickly redundant.

Okay, it’s been a while, I know.  No excuses.  I browse Facebook quite a bit and seem to do all my catching up over there but as far as long posts go, that’s no replacement for this blog.  I’ve had a number of things to post and just never have seemed to find the time so I thought I’d finally sit down and do this since I’m listening to Thriller.

This month, we’ve lost four greats in the entertainment industry: David Carradine, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson.  What a body of work between them!  As I get older, of course, I’m seeing those of my youth (even adulthood) dying more and more.  It’s to be expected I guess but the segue into it from those of the previous generation seemed to have happened when I wasn’t looking.  I still remember where I was and what I was doing when I found out George Burns died and now, here I am mourning the loss of stars of my own lifetime.  The best I can say is, “Requiescat in pace.”

Of course, having said that, the conspirist in me thinks, “Michael Jackson isn’t dead.”  There’s already too many “What?” questions floating around; too many events that happened that make you ask “Why?”  I’ll touch on that in a moment but it was these things plus the fact that MJ had such close ties to the Elvis Pressley family that make me just say that the King of Pop, the “King of the Show,” still has something in store for us.  Keep in mind that before his last major shows, he canceled because of anxiety and now, before his next tour, he suddenly dies?  His doctor suddenly disappears and no one can find him for a day.  The mysterious trucks that pull up and take away a car and other stuff, no explination given?  Now the autopsy was supposed to be done today (that was quick) but now, instead of giving a cause of death, they said that the lab tests will take time and it will be weeks before the results are known.  I remember this with the initial reports yesterday but can’t find it now but even his brothers didn’t see his body when they arrived at his home and at the hospital.  It’s a bunch of weird questions and, half-tongue-in-cheek, I think a “Back From the Dead” tour would rock people’s socks off.

Looks like Futurama got picked up for another season on Comedy Central.  A good thing, I think.  While, for the most part, I liked the movies they released, I just didn’t feel like movies were the creator’s forte.  I really liked the last season of Futurama, it seemed like the show’s team were really getting into their groove.  It was a shame to end it.  I hope that the movies will have been some practice for the team so that they’re ready to get back into their groove and pick it up again… time will tell.

I still love my G1.  While the recent software update seems to have made charging the battery take even longer than it was and shortening the standby time, some of the functionality it added is great and third parties (and Google) continue to release great apps for it: I picked up Sky Map by Google and, after the inital excitement about the compass died down, I think it has to be the coolest app I’ve seen so far.  Now if someone will just make a VPN client for it, I’d be set.

I’ll wrap up here since I seem to have run out of steam.  Keep an eye out for Michael!
