Yep, all Blu-Ray players that I've encountered will also play SD DVD's. In fact, most of them will generally upscale to 1080i-ish.

The first issue with Blu-Ray's adoption (or lack thereof) is price. The movies are too expensive. The players are too expensive. If you don't have an HD TV, well, you see where I'm headed.

Secondly, it's just not the quantum leap that DVD was. Look at the things you gained with DVD over VHS - no more rewind, decent freeze capability, less physical footprint for storage, and a quality gain that was instantly visable on ANY television set, to name a few. You just don't see such a compelling story from Blu-Ray.

A fair number of the folks I've run into are stuck on the "Well, it doesn't look THAT much better" argument. And they're right, to a point. Unless you have a 1080p screen, you're not going to see a lot of benefit over a $99 upscaling SD player.

And don't get me started on how long it takes for one of those bad boys to be up and ready to play...

I think the Microsoft ads are like Burger King - weird! I don't know how they think that quirky ads are going to get the hip young kids to buy their products like the Mac ads do. *shrug*

Gary didn't actually grow up in the Triangle, but he lived here for 5 years in the mid/late 1990s.

The website for the American Tobacco Campus is http://www.americantobaccocampus.com/ - you can see some neat-o photos.

Let us know when you want to come back for another class. :)
